Lagos To Install 16,000 Water Meters In February

The Lagos State Government is to begin the installation of 16,000 meters to regulate water supply in the state in February, 2017.

The Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation, LWC, Mr. Muminu Badmus who disclosed this on Friday at a news conference in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said the installation would begin in February next year and would last for three months.

Badmus listed the pilot areas where the metering system would take off to include Surulere, Yaba, Ebute Meta, Itire, Iwaya, Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki Phase One.

He said the 16,000 meters would be installed in the first instance to put to rest the controversy over the volume of water supplied to each household and also curb wastage.

X-raying the activities of the year, Badmus lamented that power from the national grid has been a major hindrance to water production and distribution in the State.

“Equally, the absence of gas has made the Independence Power Plant (IPP) not to function effectively as projected. It is on record that “Nigeria is losing 3,132 megawatts in a day; this is due to gas constraint, pipeline vandalization, inadequate infrastructure to transport the gas to power plants.

“The present administration has taken a proactive step in addressing this challenge with the procurement of diesel-powered generators to power our waterworks; this has made water supply to be stabled in Lagos Metropolis.

“We all know that water is the most essential element of life on earth, and our existence depends on safe and potable water, that conforms to World Health Organisation standard. That is why, Lagos Water Corporation is highly committed to its assigned responsibility of providing safe drinking water in sufficient and regular quantity, maintaining good quality services, meeting customers’ expectations and promoting community health,” he said.

Badmus explained that Lagos, as the commercial and economic hub of Nigeria with the current population of over 20 million, was projected to reach 29 million by year 2020, noting that this had put pressure on the existing LWC facilities and for the corporation to keep pace with this exponential growth of population in the State, and provide regular and sufficient water, the Corporation had designed a Lagos Water Supply Master Plan (2010 – 2020), which served as a frame work for pragmatic approach to solve the problem of water shortage that might arise from population explosion.

The LWC boss said that in spite of these daunting challenges, the corporation had executed a great number of projects that had positively impacted on the people of Lagos State.

“The State Government is expanding the water facilities to meet the water demand of 540 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) and this gave birth to the commissioning of Otta-Ikosi Regional Waterworks of 4 MGD in Epe Division, in May this year, with 80.32Km pipe network/reticulation which is currently serving eleven communities between Agbowa and Itokin.

“These include Ado, Agbowa, Ago – Hausa, Ago – Owu, Ajebon Orugbo, Iganke, Ikosi, Odo Ayandelu and Otta Ikosi. In the same month, the State commissioned Mosan-Okunola Mini Waterworks of 2MGD with 5.0Km pipe network/reticulation in Mosan Okunola LCDA. This is currently serving Abesan Estate, Baruwa, and adjoining communities.

“In the same vein, the State Executive Council recently gave an approval to commence the development of Odomola Water Scheme II of a 100MGD Water plant and the reticulation of the primary, secondary, and tertiary distribution within the Odomola service areas such as, Lekki Phase 1, Dolphin, Victoria Island – Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island Annex, Ikoyi–Alexander Road, Ikoyi – Club Road, Badore, Epe 1 and Epe 11. This Project will be executed on Public Private Partnership basis,” he stated.

He restated government’s commitment to the provision of safe and potable water to Lagosians as evident in 2017 budget as more funds had been earmarked for execution and to facilitate all the projects in the water sector to improve access to potable water in the State.

MAPOLY Set To Turn Degree-Awarding Insitution

Strong indications emerged on Thursday that the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta may become a University of Technology next year.

The state governor, Senator ibikunle Amosun was said to have submitted a letter for a law to make MAPOLY a degree-awarding institution

One Nigeria Blog gathered that state governor has presented a bill before the state house of Assembly requesting that MAPOLY be turned into a degree awarding institution.
It was further gathered that, the letter sent by the governor to the Assembly was dated December 20, 2016.
The decision, according to the findings was ratified by the state Executive Council after which the Assembly was notified on the need for a law to be enacted for the smooth process towards making MAPOLY a degree-awarding institution.
This bill which was sent alongside another letter requesting for the establishment of the state Polytechnic, Ipokia was read by the Speaker of the house Hon Suraaj Adekunbi at the plenary.
According to the speaker, the correspondence dated 20th of December was forwarded to the house by Mr Governor.
The Speaker, who read the letter at the plenary to the lawmakers quoted the governor to have written” I forward here with this for a law to provide for the establishment of Moshood Abiola University of Technology and matters of administration and discipline of students connected there with and law to provide for the establishment, incorporation and function of the Ogun state Polytechnic, Ipokia.
He added, ”For other matters incidental there to or connected there with as approved at the 51st state executive council held on 19 December 2016 for the kind consideration and passage of the house of Assembly, Please accept the assurances as always of my highest regard.”
It will be recalled that the Rector of the Polytechnic Prof. Oludele  Itiola  recently told the state house of Assembly  that the  Polytechnic needs N40 million for the institution to be turned into a degree awarding institution.
The academic don said this during the defence of the 2017 appropriation bill of the institution before the lawmakers.

Nigerians Celebrities Who Didn't Shine This Year

As year 2016 is logging out, we have some Nigerian celebrities who didn't shine a lot this year.

Below is a list of artistes whose stars didn't shine in 2016

Omawumi
Not just a few believed Omawunmi would excel going by her performance during the Idols reality show that shot her into limelight in 2007. She has cemented her name as an achiever and force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian entertainment scene. Her sophomore album, ‘Lasso of Truth,’ which was released in 2015 was said to be a commercial success. Omawumi managed to break that jinx where just male artistes had held sway in the music scene for a long time.

But fast forward to 2016, not much was heard from the singer musically. Thank God for social media anyway, but for Instagram where the babe would always post one or two stuff, her presence would have dwindled considerably.

Yes, she managed to release a song with Grammy Award winner, Angelique Kidjo but did it have a very positive impact in her career in 2016? No!

Anyway, fans still love her and hope that not only would she change her hairstyle in 2017, she would also come up with better and bigger hits.

Waje
And like her bestfriend Omawumi, Waje was almost pushed to the background this year.

Save for ‘The Voice Nigeria’ which kind of kept her busy as a judge in the reality show, Waje’s impact in the music scene was almost insignificant.

Waje has been  busier on social media than in the studio this year. Yes, fans got to know more about her grown up daughter and her cool dresses which she proudly showed off every now and then. And of course, she also proudly showed off her figure as she transformed from a plus-sized babe to a much trimmer lady.

The last time Waje released her self-titled album was in May 2013. The album was critically acclaimed but ever since then, she has been releasing single tracks.

This year, the music diva has been able to release only one track which she titled ‘Ominiknowest.’

It was once reported that the singer planned to take a four year break from music. So the question is, has she started the hiatus?

Chidinma
Chidinma ‘Miss Kedike’ Ekile is a typical example of the expression that great things come in small packages.

The Project Fame winner started strong after the competition winning any award that she was nominated for. One of such milestone awards is the Kora and she was the first female musician to get to the number one spot on the MTV Base top ten countdown. With her trailblazing success, she won the admiration of many as several celebrities have openly confessed that they have a crush on the petite damsel.

The girl didn’t allow her small frame to deter her from conquering the music industry. But that was long ago.

This year, Chidinma was busier arousing people’s curiosity as to whether she is dating artiste, Flavour or not especially when she deleted all the pictures on her social media page save for hers and Flavour’s.

It seems that the star is fast fizzling out of the industry. Not much has been heard from the singer musically this year. Her recent song, ‘Fall in Love,’ which she released some weeks ago does not have the same buzz that always characterises songs.

So many fans expect Chidinma to wake up in 2017.

D’banj
‘Oh, how the mighty has fallen’ would certainly be the expression on so many peoples’ minds especially when they think of the self-acclaimed entertainer and Kokomaster, D’banj.

With his ‘nothing-dey-happen’ attitude since he broke up from his partner and friend Don Jazzy, D’banj has yet to make any strong impact musically.

But thank God for his song ‘Emergency’ which was released early in the year, it was a good work and so many people felt D’banj had finally survived the break-up.

Alas, his ‘Focus,’ ‘If no be God,’ ‘Breaking New’ and ‘Gifted’ didn’t make any impact at all. D’banj needs to step up his game in 2017, otherwise his career would land in Emergency Room!

Iyanya
Well, thank God for ‘Krukere,’ nobody would have known Iyanya apart from the fact that he was a sensation at the then Project Fame competition.

Another thing that stood him out is his sexy body which makes ladies- old and young – go wild! But how has that affected his career in 2016?

His controversial exit from Ubi Franklin’s Triple M Records made more headlines than the release of his following songs, ‘Type of woman,’ ‘Nothing Mega,’ ‘Yoga song,’ ‘Sukumma,’ ‘Why,’ and ‘Heartbeat.’ Just a handful of people would have ‘felt’ the songs.

With his new marriage to Don Jazzy’s Mavin, who knows, 2017 might be a better year as hopefully, the ace producer would give Iyanya his Midas Touch.

Wande Coal
It seems Wande Coal found his sound late this year with the new song, ‘Iskaba,’ which he released few weeks ago. Before then, nothing much was heard from the young man. His first album, ‘Mushin to Mo’hit’ was a collector’s item but his sophomore album, ‘Wanted,’ which was released in 2015 was not really wanted by a lot of people as many have described the album as a flop.

Hopefully 2017 would be better for the dreadlock wearing singer.

Your Days Are Numbered, Army Tells Shekau

The Director, Defence Information, Brig.Gen. Rabe Abubakar, has called Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, “a coward” and says his days are numbered.
He also called on his remaining members to surrender and not be deceived by Shekau.
This is coming just after 15 Boko Haram insurgents were killed by troops on Friday in a gun battle at Rann, Borno State. Reports says five soldiers were also critically injured.
Abubakar said those arrested were already supplying the Military with vital information.
“The Boko Haram insurgents are applying medicine after death. After all, we are aware that such video was done before we took over Sambisa Forest. Therefore, the release of the video is not surprising to us,” Abubakar said.
“The insurgents are defeated and those arrested are giving us the vital information that will aid our mop-up operations in the area.
“We are going to convert the forest to a training camp soon. Shekau is a coward and we will trail him to anywhere he is hiding. He is definitely not in the Sambisa Forest of Borno State.
“We are calling on the remnants of the Boko Haram sect to surrender for their safety before it is late. They should not allow Shekau to deceive them as his days are numbered. The public should disregard all the antics of the terrorists.”

Nigerian Killed In South Africa For Selling Drugs (PHOTOS)

Mr. Tochukwu Nnadi popularly known as King was allegedly squeezed on the throat to dead by SA Interpol early hours of yesterday for selling drugs after being handcuffed.

According to reports, the brother who was called to the scene trying to find out why his brother was brutally killed in such a manner was also shot and taken to custody without explanation.

South african governments are not doing good because they won't make more investigation before executing our people

Ibrahim Magu Not Sacked -- EFCC

Several reports earlier emerged that the acting chairman of the economic and financial crime commission was sacked, But the EFCC has dismissed reports that its Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, has been removed from office.

Recall that reports earlier surfaced, saying the Federal Government has redeployed Magu back to the Nigeria Police Force.

The report alleged that the redeployment of Magu was to pave way for the new person to be nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation.

But the anti – graft agency in a terse statement on its twitter handle @officialEFCC, on Saturday wrote: “Guardian Newspaper Lied, Magu not sacked.”

The debacle over Magu’s continued stay as the anti-graft head started few weeks ago after the senate refused to confirm him.

The upper legislative chamber, cited a damning security report from sister agency, the Department of State Services, DSS, which implicated Magu as reason for refusing to confirm him.

Femi Adesina (@FemAdesina) also tweet on the false information

He wrote “No truth in story making the rounds that Magu has been removed as EFCC chairman. AFG is even yet to submit his probe report to the president

Army Presents Shekau’s Flag To President Buhari

The Nigerian Army on Friday night in Abuja hosted President Muhammadu Buhari to Guards Brigade Regimental Dinner and presented to him the captured Boko Haram flag.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the flag was handed over to the President by the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. -Gen. Lucky Irabor.
NAN recalls that men of the Operation Lafiya Dole operating in the North East had ‎‎successfully captured ‎the‎ “Camp Zero”, ‎the strongest enclave of Boko Haram terrorists sect, in the Sambisa Forest.‎

Irabor, had disclosed that ‎about 1,240 suspected Boko Haram terrorists were arrested during a mop-up operation by troops inside the Sambisa forest.
While receiving the flag, President Buhari challenged the army forces on the need to continue to ensure the survival of Nigeria as a geo-political entity despite what he described as “political madness’’ being exhibited in some parts of the country.
According to him, it is duty bound for the army to ensure the sustenance of peaceful co-existence among the over 250 ethnic groups across the country.
“We will do our best to build the national institutions in the country.
“All these political madness in the North East, the Niger Delta or in the East should not be allowed to cause division or any form of tension in the country.
“There are 250 ethnic groups, so keeping Nigeria one is a task that must be done, even for your personal reason you must make sure this country remains united and stronger,’’ he said.
President Buhari, who narrated his early military life in Abeokuta and subsequent redeployment to Zaire (now Congo), said he was almost killed while on duty even before enjoying his first salary as an officer.
The president, therefore, stated that he was conversant with the problems of the military having spent over 25 years in the military.
He recalled how his refusal to adhere to an advice from the IMF, World Bank to devalue the naira and increase prices of fuel and flour, as a military Head of State, led to his removal.
He said: “I refused and gave my reasons and the next thing I knew I was removed and detained for three and half years.
“As a civilian president I will do my best and I’m telling you all these because you are part of the leadership of this great country and God willing we will remain great.”
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai urged the officers and men of the Guards Brigade to always maintain the courage and discipline they were known for in 2017 and beyond.
He assured that the military would continue their onslaught in the North East, and would not rest in mopping up of the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents.
Buratai reassured that the Nigerian Army would remain apolitical in carrying out its duties to the nation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the regimental dinner night, which was organized to mark the end of drilling year of the Presidential Brigade of Guards, afforded the officers of the brigade to socialize with their commanders.
The highlight of the occasion was the ‎inauguration of the PMB Gymnasium at the Scorpion Mess in W.U. Bassey Cantonment by the President.
The event also witnessed the presentation of Souvenirs, Scorpion Magazine and Compendium of Guards Brigade as well as the conducts of the band by the President.
The Commander, Brigade of Guards, Brig.-Gen. Musa Yusuf, delivered the vote of thanks at the occasion which was attended by notable personalities including the representative of Senate President, ‎Sen. Leader, Ali Ndume and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammed Bello.

Buhari Sacks Magu As EFCC Boss

After the EFCC chairman has been rejected by the senate, another move has drawn the public indicating his sack

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, may have finally been removed from office.

A source close to the matter told The Guardian that his redeployment back to Nigerian Police Force (NPF) was to pave way for a fresh person to be presented by President Muhammadu Buhari as the nominee to head the anti-graft agency before the Senate.

It was gathered to make the situation look like a routine exercise; some senior Police officers would be re-deployed by the Police hierarchy to resume as conventional Police officers.

It was equally reliably gathered yesterday that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has already issued a leter to Magu on the development and directed that he hands over to the Director of Operations in the Commission.

Magu’s nomination was recently rejected by the Senate following allegations levelled against him by the Department of State Security Service (DSS).
