Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo (née Adelana) was born November 25, 1915 to a modest family in the small Ikenne community of Ogun State , Nigeria.
Between 1928 and 1933, Chief (Mrs) Awolowo attended Methodist Girls High School located at Broad Street in Lagos. Driven by an unquenchable desire to give back to her school wherein she drank from the fountain of knowledge, she decided to return to her alma mater which she did, and taught there between 1934 and 1936 before moving into the sphere of business.
“She was the only child of her mother. Her Mother was very anxious of giving her the best training. She felt that if she stayed at home with her, she might over-pamper her and she took her to a Pastor in Lagos and that was where she grew up. Mama grew up under a very strict upbringing and thus was very disciplined. If you did not do anything right, all she needed to do was just one look and you would understand what she meant.”

Affectionately referred to as the “Jewel of Inestimable Value” by her husband, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief (Mrs) HID Awolowo was graciously bequeathed to this side of existence by the benevolent hands of providence in Ikenne Remo on November 25, 1915, to Chief Odugbemi Adelana, the Ayangbuwa of Ikenne and Baba Ijo of St. Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne, and Princess Elizabeth Oyesile Adelana, one of the founders of the Apostolic Church in Ikenne.
She was also a successful businesswoman and astute politician. She played an active role in the politics of Western Nigeria. She stood in for her husband in the alliance formed between the NCNC and the AG, called the United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA), while he was tried and in jail.
The plans were that she would contest the elections, and if she won, would step down for her husband in a by-election. To fulfil his dream of becoming president in the Second Republic, she toured the length and breadth of the country with her husband campaigning. She also coordinated the women's wing of the party and was always present at all party caucuses.
HID was awarded the Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) of the University of Calabar and the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University).
She received the award of the Fellow of Academy of Religion (FAR) by the Nigerian Association for the Study of Religion (NASR). This was done in recognition of her unique and unwavering contributions to the advancement of humanity and her role in the employment of religion as a veritable tool both in national and global development.
She was the first to import lace materials and other textiles into Nigeria. She is the Grandmother of the Vice President’s Wife, Dolapo Osinbajo
HID Awolowo Died On September 19, 2015, she died at the age of 99
