Hear what CNN said about the New PDP chairman
The new national chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff may have repeatedly denied having any links with Boko Haram as insinuated in some quarters, but that has not stopped his critics from making the damaging allegation.
The latest to make the allegation is international news channel, CNN, which boldly labeled the former Borno State governor “Boko Haram founder”.
The CNN, in an half hour programme “The Brief”, which focuses on the week’s most important stories, ran a Breaking News banner that read “Boko Haram founder, Modu Sheriff emerged Nigeria’s People’s Democratic Party Chairman”.
The PDP is yet to respond to this brazen allegation against its national chairman.

We are in Nigeria for Robbery, Suspects confess)
suspects |
Five Niger Republic nationals arrested for armed robbery have told police detectives that they came to Nigeria to make money. The suspects, Mustapha Musa (21), Abdulahi Ali (21), Saidi Isa (21), Ali Alisuma (22), Yakubu Adamu (22) and Isiaka Yakubu (23), were arrested by police patrol team at Tinubu on Lagos Island.
It was gathered that the suspects were all working as porters at
Balogun Market before they met one Isa Musa from Borno State who
introduced them to robbery.
But Musa said he met the men at Obalende when they asked him to take them somewhere. He said: “I have spent about 15 years in Lagos. I was once a motorcycle rider.
But my motorcycle was impounded about five times by the police that was why I bought a Toyata Sunny car which I used for transportation.
“The boys have been into the robbery before I met them. I joined them about two months ago. I have also shared about N140,000 from the proceeds from the two the operations he went for. Our major target is warehouse.
Our last operation was at Mandilas Mall before we were arrested by the police.”
The gang leader, Alisuma, said he used to call Musa on the phone whenever his members wanted to go for any operation.
He said: “Whenever we went on operation, my own work was to use sledge hammer and other tools to break doors, while my colleagues who were armed with machetes would go in and steel money and some other valuables.
We have robbed at Mandilas Mall and one other warehouse at Tinubu area of the Island. I also used to instruct my members on what to do because they do not understand the Island routes very well.
“I came to Nigeria to work but because my expectation was not met by working as a porter at Idumota, my colleagues and I decided to go into robbery so as to be able to send money back home.
Our parents believe there is money in Nigeria that was why they are expecting much from anyone of us who come to Nigeria.”

No special centre for 2016 exam -- Jamb
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said it would not create any special centre for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the UTME, which will be Computer Base Test (CBT) mode all through, is expected to begin on Monday, Feb. 29. This is contained in a statement signed by the Head, Media and Information of the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, and made available to NAN in Lagos. According to the statement, the attention of the board was drawn to protests by some alleged prospective candidates in Edo and Lagos states over the closure of the board’s registration portal in preparation to the UTME. “The board sincerely sympathises with the plight of these prospective candidates. “It is indeed the wish of the board that the Nigerian youth desirous of tertiary education are given ample opportunity to register for its examination
This is why it began the sale of its application document in August 2015, which is about seven months ago. “In the advertisement for the sale of the registration documents, the board clearly stated that the sales would close by January. “But due to public appeal it extended the registration process to February,” the statement read in part. The board further stated that it could not allow candidates to register perpetually, adding that it had a time table and it adheres strictly to it. It noted that this was to allow tertiary institutions to begin admission processes early. “We all must work to enshrine the culture of discipline in the system and ensure that tertiary institutions calendars are not truncated. “It is most unfortunate that some candidates waited until our website was withdrawn before making attempts to register,” the board stated. It noted that every aspiring candidate was expected to know the procedure as proper publicity involving the media was done. NAN reports that more than one million candidates have so far registered for the examination on the all CBT platform within and outside the country. More than 500 centres were also accredited for the conduct of the examination within and outside Nigeria.

i didn't spent 1 trillion on Jonathan's Campaign -- Kingsley Kuku
kingsley kuku |
Former Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger-Delta Affairs, Kingsley Kuku has denied media reports linking him with an alleged disbursement of over N1 trillion allegedly spent by the Presidency in the last two weeks to the March 28, 2015 Presidential Election.
A media report has alleged that the wife of the former president, Patience Jonathan may soon be invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to explain her role in the sourcing and disbursement of the huge funds spent by the Presidency.
The fund, estimated at over a trillion naira, was reportedly routed and disbursed through the Amnesty Office to some notable politicians in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But Kuku, who then doubled as the chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), in a statement said the alleged investigation by the anti-graft agency into the funds was another calculated attempt to deliberately smear his name and forcefully hang on his neck, corruption charges he knew nothing about.

New Olubadan to be corronated on March 4
The coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadan will take place on
March 4, 2016
The disclosure was made by the Olubadan-designate himself, High Chief Saliu Adetunji. He dropped the hint when he played host to the Juju music maestro, Chief Ebenezer Olasupo Obey Fabiyi in his Popoyemoja, Ibadan residence on Saturday.
Adetunji noted that the date was arrived at after extensive consultations with stakeholders, explaining that some of the reasons why the coronation had not been held before now was the
befitting burial successfully completed organised for the late Oba.
“Sincerely, the Olubadan-in-Council must not only make, but submit their endorsement of the new Olubadan to His Excellency, the Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi. Then, the Governor must ratify the decision.
“Once you cross the barrier, you get the date. So, the date is Friday, March 4 at Oja’Ba, Ibadan where the previous Olubadan received their staff of office. But, Saturday, March 5 is for big reception at a venue that is yet to be
decided,” he revealed.

APC protest as INEC declared David Mark winner of Benue South Senatorial rerun
Protest greeted the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won Saturday’s Benue South rerun election, ensuring it’s candidate, David Mark, retained his Senate seat, from which the court ejected him a few months ago.
However, Daniel Onjeh, a 41-year-old former students’ leader, who contested on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) wanted the result declared inconclusive.
The rerun was conducted after the Appeal Court annulled the March 28, 2015 election of which Mark was declared winner by INEC.
Declaring the results of the rerun at 5.51am on Sunday, the Senatorial Returning Officer, Ishaq Eneji, said Mark garnered 84,192 votes, leaving margin of 12,571 between him and Onjeh who scored 71,621 votes.
“Having satisfied the requirement of the law, David Bournaventure is hereby declared winner, Eneji announced.
While 522, 713 were registered for the election, only 165, 093 were accredited, indicating voters apathy across the senatorial zone.
A further breakdown showed 159,557 was the number of total votes cast, of which 155,813 votes were held valid, while 3,744 were rejected as invalid.
According to the results declared by Eneji, out of the nine local government areas of which the district is composed, Mark secured victory in five local government areas: Ado, Agatu, Apa, Otukpo and Okpokwu.
Onjeh won in four, namely Ogbadigbo, his hometown, Ohimini, Obi and Oju LGAs.
Meanwhile, a total of 29,273 votes were cancelled, higher than the margin of win of 12,571 between Messrs Mark and Onjeh.
However, Eneji declared the former Senate President winner despite protest by APC agent who asked that the election election be declared inconclusive.
Report Crime to Police, not on Facebook - Police Commissioner advice Lagosians
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni has admonished residents of the state to instantly alert the police of any crime in their neighbourhood rather than ‘breaking the news’ on the social media.
Owoseni, while addressing newsmen in Lagos on Friday, called on Nigerians to instantly alert the police of any crime, rather than hoarding the information and waiting to post it on the social media thereafter.
He said, “We have launched police application on smart phones. We have hot lines which are in public domain and we have telephones at every police station where the public can reach us at any time of the day or night.
“There is usually a police team at every point in the state and crime could be combated easily and quickly if the police would get the information instantly.
“When they hoard information, we could have used that time to deal with the situation promptly. So, we beg the public to help us in order for us to help them. It is their taxes that are used to pay our salaries. We are always there for the public.”
The Police Commissioner further noted that policemen experience avoidable challenges from residents when they want to respond to distress calls.
Owoseni said, “Sometimes, we get distress calls, when we get to some streets, we find the gates locked and the gatemen manning would be nowhere to be found. This contributes to ways criminals get away with crime easily.
The Lagos State Government has even said some of these structures should be removed. We should learn to obey the law,” he added.
Wife of Air Force Chief, Amosu, Finally Returns Stolen N381m
amosu |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered N381m from Mrs. Omolara Amosu, the wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, who is in detention.
EFCC sources said that the money was recovered in three tranches: N180m, N101m and N100m.
A detective in the anti-graft agency told PUNCH that the money was traced from the account of the Nigeria Air Force to the bank accounts of a company in which Amosu’s wife is a director.
He added that Amosu’s wife is a signatory to the accounts.
He said, “We recovered N381m from Amosu’s wife, Omolara. Initially, we recovered N180m from her account before another N101m and then N100m. These were monies transferred from Air Force accounts.”
Explaining how the money was diverted, the detective added, “They (Air Force officers) sent the money to an account where their wives have interests or are signatories without doing anything.”
A second source within the EFCC said more properties belonging to the immediate past Chief of Accounts and Budgeting of NAF, Air Vice Marshal J.B. Adigun, had been seized.
The detective said a property, a quarry located in Ogun State, had equipment worth about $600,000.
Houses worth over N2bn in Ikoyi and Victoria Island allegedly belonging to Adigun had been seized.
The source said, “Adigun is still here with us. We recovered a quarry which he owns. In the quarry there were pieces of equipment worth about $600,000. They have all been impounded and investigations are ongoing.”
“A parcel of land, located on Bourdillon Drive, Ikoyi, worth N908m, belonging to Adigun has also been seized by the EFCC operatives.”
“A house located on Adeyemo Alakija Street, GRA Ikeja, near the Ghanaian High Commission, which belongs to Amosu has also been sealed. It is worth over N200m.”

2016 budget does not exceed N6.08 trillion -- Lai Mohammed
lai mohammed |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Saturday said that the 2016 budget was not padded because the total figure voted for all ministries had not exceeded N6.08 trillion.
Speaking with the News Men: He said 2016 budget has not be tampered with and he also stated that the budget did not exceed N6.08 trillion.
Here the full story: “This is the first time in the history of this country that a government will embark what is called zero based budget.
“Before now, the budget system was what was called an enveloped system. In an envelope system, there is no justification as to why we need N30 billion for a structure.’’
“This year, we decide that every ministry must have a zero based budget. In other word, you must justify and explain why you need N100 billion.
“This is very good system, the soft ware for it was also very different. The personnel were not used to it,’’
“Now, in the process we got to National Assembly. What the ministers do is to have a broad overview of the budget. The template used by the Budget Office is uniform for all ministers.’’

Anita Jones says she’s been unlucky with relationships in the past, but she believes that this time she may have found the man of her life. “I’m good at having babies, but I’m really awful when it comes to picking the fathers of my children. Man beats his mum to death two days after being released from Prison
suspect
Two days after completing a 30-year prison sentence for a 1984 murder conviction, a New Jersey man allegedly killed his 64-year-old mother.
On Wednesday, Steven Pratt, 47, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, admitting his role in his mother's beating death, police say.
A statement from prosecutors obtained by PEOPLE confirms Pratt, an Atlantic City resident who lived with his mother, repeatedly struck his mother Gwendolyn Pratt in the head the morning of Oct. 12, 2014. Police responded to the Pratt home that morning and found Gwendolyn's lifeless body inside.
The statement says officers immediately took Pratt into custody and an autopsy later revealed the victim died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Pratt faces 25 more years behind bars when he is sentenced within the next few months, police say.
On Oct. 10, 2014, Pratt was released from a New Jersey prison, where he'd spent the previous three decades for the fatal shooting of Michael Anderson.
When he was 15, Anderson caught Pratt smoking marijuana with friends and confronted the boy.
During that incident, Pratt struck Anderson in the face with a lead pipe. After being hit, Anderson retreated, but hours later, Pratt knocked on his apartment's door. When he opened it, Pratt shot Anderson
Don't use Rule of Law to defend corruption -- Lai Mohamed
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the present Administration will continue to fight corruption within the confines of the Rule of Law, but warned that it (Rule of Law) was not intended to be used as a weapon to hamper the dispensation of justice.
‘’In response to the ongoing anti-corruption efforts of the government, an increasing number of voices have emerged in defence of suspects being indicted for various acts of corruption by the courts of law under the banner of upholding the Rule of Law.
‘’Let me stress that the Rule of Law is not and was never intended to be used as a line of defense for suspects undergoing trial for corrupt practices in the courts of law that are lawfully constituted and endowed with the legitimate authority to carry out same trial,’’ the Minister said at a symposium organized by the Gani Fawehinmi Students’ Chamber of the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.
He said the Administration is a product and true advocate of the Rule of Law, and that ‘’there is no greater proponent of that time-tested legal principle than Mr. President himself.’’
The Minister said there was nothing questionable in the Administration’s approach to fighting corruption, adding: ‘’The government is bound by law and is following the Rule of Law in its anti-corruption efforts. Were this not the case, the accused persons so far charged would not be having their day in court.’’

Not all Lawyers are corrupt -- Femi Falana
Human Rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, yesterday pointed out that majority of Nigerian lawyers are people of integrity and are willing to work with EFCC in its fight against corrupt individuals.
He however, said he and his colleagues are embarrassed when senior lawyers connive with judges in order to pervert course of justice.
He assured the EFCC Chairman that majority of the Nigerian lawyers are solidly behind the Commission, should anybody/group decide to harass or intimidate the Commission.
Mean while, the EFCC boss also disclosed that aside from the widely publicized case against Rickey Tarfa SAN, the Commission has taken several lawyers to court adding that some of them have even been convicted.
"We have been quietly investigating, many senior lawyers across the country in relation to some to the proceeds of certain heinous crimes against Nigerian people. When we reach a comfortable stage in our investigation, we would take them to court and make the outcome of our enquiries known to the Nigerian people," he stated.
Beware of fraudsters, OAU management warns admission seekers and parents
Authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Thursday called parents and guardians of candidates, seeking admission into the institution to be wary of fraudsters who parade themselves as our admission officers in the university.
A release signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju stated that one of such fraudsters who claimed to be the admission officer of the institution, identified as Omodele Taiwo had been arrested by the security operatives of the university.
According to the release, Omodele had already N600,000 from two parents seeking admission into OAU for their children.
Another attempt, "Omodele’s attempt N100,000 from his two victims, who are parents of the two candidates (names withheld) eventually led to his arrest upon interrogation, he admitted committing the crime and collecting the money, but blamed the devil for pushing him into the act".
Accordingly, the university spokesman advised parents and guardians of candidates seeking admission into OAU not to be too desperate to be looking for shortcut, so that they would not be falling victims of fraudsters who disguises as admission officers.
"In view of this, OAU management wishes to emphasize that we do not ask parents, guardians or candidates to pay for admission, nor do we ask them to pay into individuals’ bank account to secure admission," the release added.

Senator Kaka Adegbenga interview with New Telegraph
Is it right to say that Nigeria is where it is today because of lack of leadership…
I won’t say lack of leadership but poor leadership and bad followership. Nobody can be exonerated; we are all in it. I have repeated it times without number that even within our family settings, some people are corrupt against themselves. I believe the solution starts from attitudinal changes.
We need to look at ourselves and strive with everything at our disposal to attempt to do what is right. Once that is done, we would be returning to the sanity path. The leadership must live by examples, not by precept. You can’t ask the common man to tighten his belt when your tummy is protruding beyond normalcy. You can’t ask people to go fasting when they are seeing you eating gluttonously. You can’t ask people to learn to use public transport when there are no means of transportation. The rail system and waterways are not working.
The roads are totally bad and you have people constructing gigantic bridges. Can the bridges work without the roads? Would the bridges in urban centers serve the purpose of those in rural areas who constitute over 70 per cent of the population? Housing is one of the problems in the country but most of the housing being constructed both at the federal and state levels are meant for the elite.
They are not meant for the downtrodden and that it is what made it possible for the elite to continue to buy governmentowned housing estates at subsidized rates, with some buying between six to 10 houses only for them to become shylock landlords.
Is that satisfying the housing needs of the people? Human need is very minimal but you find some people accumulating items that are not needed; primitive accumulation. How can you ask common people to pay tax when you are not paying? You are flying a private jet and your tax is not reflecting your affluence.
You have a mansion that is worth billions and you are not paying tenement rates or any tax and you want a man living in a mud house to pay tenement rate. That is height of corruption. We must all be equal before the law. If the leadership is providing the needed impetus, you will discover that people would have attitudinal change. And if the leadership leads by example, followers will follow willingly.

Soyinka Calls On Buhari To Convene Emergency Conference To Save The Economy
The Nobel Laureate made the call when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed in Abuja on Thursday.
Soyinka said the conference is necessary to enable experts diagnose the problems facing the country and to make necessary recommendation for government to get the economy out of the woods. His words:
"I agree with those who say the economy is bad. It is obvious and it is so bad. We really need an emergency economic conference, bringing experts together to match the nation forward.
I think the economy is not encouraging. Quite frankly, I think most economists will agree with this.
[But] the economic condition of a nation does not deteriorate over night, something came before that deterioration. A certain prolonged process of attrition that happened in the past is now knocking on the door.
The consequences of the past misgovernance is what we are undergoing right now."Prof Soyinka said the government can overcome the mistakes of the past that has led the economy to the sorry state it is today, if President Buhari can meet with sincere economists and fashion a way out.

How Islamic Banking can promote financial inclusion
President, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group, Dr. Ahmad Mohamed Ali, has said that Islamic banking can promote financial inclusion in the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) member states. Speaking during the 4th World Government Summit 2016 in Dubai, Dr Ali re-affirmed the IDB Group’s readiness to address the challenges facing member countries, particularly in the area of financial inclusion.
He said that the IDB Group would support special strategies to promote financial inclusion, implementing quick-win programs and innovative solutions that enhance socio-economic development, prosperity and well being. Dr. Ali emphasised the importance of the summit, given the crucial development issues it discusses, including fiscal challenges, financial inclusion and partnerships to support sustainable development.
He added that IDB’s successful experience in the field has attracted the attention of international development institutions such as the French Development Agency. The Islamic microfinance programme was launched by IDB Group to offer financing to those who do not have access to banking services. It helps people participate in economic activities that will provide them with decent livelihoods.
The programme has had great success in Sudan and Tunisia. Dr. Ali further affirmed IDB Group’s readiness to replicate successful projects in other countries, to contribute more effectively to future editions of the summit, and to set up an exhibition showcasing success stories for the benefit of the summit’s participants.
Nigeria became a pariah state under ex-president Jonathan – Lai Mohammed
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information who justified the trips said that they were necessary to bring the country on back on the track of development and growth, saying that Nigeria was a pariah state under the former president Goodluck Jonathan.
He said that under Jonathan’s watch, corruption permeated country such that foreign investors deserted it.
He stated that it was necessary to tell Nigerians who had been inquisitive of the many Buhari’s trips to know that the trips had started paying off as the investors’ confidence in the country had been restored.
Mohammed spoke during a press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the presidential villa, Abuja.
He said “You do not run a country by by being isolated. The personal presence of Mr. President in many of these fora is important because before now we were almost a pariah state. And the issues that have been driving investments away from this country are terrorism and corruption.
“One thing that no body can fault this president for is his determination and strength of purpose in resolving these matters. So, Mr. President’s presence in many of these fora is highly crucial even in fixing our economy back at home.”
Asked to expatiate on what he meant by “pariah state” in the light of the fact that the former administration of Jonathan praised itself for growing the economy, a feat that led to the rebasing of the economy to lift Nigeria’s status to the largest economy in the African subregion, Mohammed insisted that foreign investors ran away from Nigeria
He said: “What I mean by Nigeria is a pariah state before now is simply that before now the level of corruption was so high that no body was ready to risk his investment in Nigeria. The cost of doing business was so high that most international business people did not want to come here.
“And of course, who wants to come to a country where there is insecurity to invest? And these are the issues that the president has addressed in the last few months. So, this is what I meant by before now we are almost a pariah state.”
Mohammed’s counter-part in Environment, Amina Mohammed corroborated the position saying that the president’s needed not to run the country by staying at home especially when he had a deputy and a cabinet of ministers to look after home affairs.
She stated that president Buhari needed to do more of the trips to keep attracting worthwhile investments to Nigeria.
“The president has a cabinet and the cabinet stays with the Vice President as much as possible to try to address those challenges. The investments that we make with the President’s travels are well worth already the returns that we are getting from these visits. We hope to continue president going out and advocating for this country to get more investments so that we can take everyone out of poverty. So, that is an important thing and we see an investment that is worthwhile”, she said.Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information who justified the trips said that they were necessary to bring the country on back on the track of development and growth, saying that Nigeria was a pariah state under the former president Goodluck Jonathan.

So, that is an important thing and we see an investment that is worthwhile”, she said.
