Ibadan Police Arrest Groom, Family Members For Robbery At Wedding Engagement

Serious Drama ensued at Amuloko area of Ibadan, oyo state on Saturday after some policemen storms a wedding engagement and arrested a man suspected to be a member of an Armed robbery gang

Report has it that he was picked up during his wedding engagement.

The suspect, who is fondly known as Togo, was arrested alongside some members of his family and that of the bride for alleged involvement in armed robbery.

A source at the event informed journalists that the police stormed the event at Olaoluwa area of Amuloko, packed the wedding cakes and some of the items meant for the wedding.

“Immediately the policemen stormed the venue, they headed straight to where the groom was sitting and handcuffed him.

“They also picked some members of his family; while this was going on, people that have come from different location for the wedding flee in different directions”, the source said.

A police source who spoke on condition of anonymity said “the groom and other members of his gang robbed at Olodo on Friday and two of them were arrested in the morning and later another one was arrested; he was the one that gave us the information about Togo’s wedding and the other one is now at large.”

However, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu said though he had read the report somewhere, he was not aware of its source.

Ajisebutu in a telephone conversation with DAILY POST on Sunday told the reporter to call him back so as to find out the source of the story.

“I am not aware of the incident.

“Though, I have read about it somewhere but I don’t know the source of the story. I will find out. Call me back, let me find out”, he said.

500 Level Student Of LAUTECH Commits Suicide Inside Hostel (Photo)

A final year student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Adesoji Adediran, has committed suicide.

The 500-level student of Urban and Regional Planning Department hanged himself in the school’s hostel on Saturday.

It was gathered that his roommates, who had been away for a night study, returned in the morning to find his corpse dangling from the ceiling.

The school management was said to have been alerted, which informed policemen from the Owode division, who removed the remains.

The corpse was said to have been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

A classmate, who asked not to be identified, said Adediran’s remains were found around 5.30am.

He said, “He has two roommates. The roommates went for a night study on Friday. When they returned to the room on Saturday, they discovered that he had hanged himself with a cable. Nobody has an idea why he killed himself.”

A close friend of the victim, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed surprise at his death.

He said, “As his friend, what pained me most was that we still played together on Friday night. He never opened up to me. We asked him to go with us for the night study, but he said he preferred to stay behind. Around 5.30am when we returned, we found his corpse. He was almost done with his final year project and he never complained of anything. We are a clique and we eat together; it was all fun, until we found his corpse.”

He described Adeniran as “funny and lively”, saying he couldn’t have suffered from depression.

The police took statements from the roommates, which were later withdrawn by the deceased’s parents, who insisted on not pursuing any case due to the nature of the death.

Punch reports that the parents also objected to the idea of holding a candle-light procession in his honour, saying they wanted him to “rest in peace.”

15 Year Jail Term For Land Grabbers In Oyo As Ajimobi Signs New Bill

Forcible seizure of any landed property across Oyo State or an attempt to do so, otherwise known as land grabbing, has become a criminal offence that attracts a maximum of 15 years imprisonment or a fine of N500,000 or both.

This is one of the provisions of the new Real Properties Protection Law, 2016, which the Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, signed into law, at the Executive Council Chambers, in Ibadan, on Friday.

The law is titled, “A law to protect the rights of property owners and prohibit forceful entry, illegal occupation, violent and fraudulent conducts, in relation to real properties in Oyo State and for purposes connected therewith.”

At the signing ceremony were the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Michael Adeyemo; Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey and Urban Development; Mr. Ajiboye Omodewu; and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Seun Abimbola.

The law also prescribes ten years jail term or a fine of N500,000 upon conviction for illegal entry into any construction site “for the purpose of stopping, disturbing or otherwise” demand for any fee or levy in respect of construction activities.

Under the new law, any professional who in the conduct of his duties facilitates a contractual agreement between a land owning family and any other person knowing that such agreement will contravene the provisions of the new law is also liable to imprisonment for three years, a fine of N500,000 or both.

Similarly, anyone that writes whatever is deemed to be a frivolous and unwarranted petition, containing false claims, under the anti-land grabbing law is liable to imprisonment for 10 years on conviction.

Part of the law reads, “Any person who, without lawful authority, uses or threatens violence for the purpose of grabbing any real property for himself or for any other person commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment of 15 years or a fine of N500,000 or both.

“Any person who encroaches on any real property commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for 5 years or a fine not exceeding N500,000.

“Any person who is on any property as an encroacher and having with him any firearm, dangerous or offensive weapons commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for five years.

“Any person who offers for sale any property knowing that he has no lawful title to the property or authority of the owner or sells a property knowing that that he has no lawful title to the property or that the property has been previously sold by him or his privies is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for 5 years.”

At the ceremony, the governor said that the law was meant to protect the rights of property owners and to stop the nefarious activities of land merchants who willfully and violently seize people’s land.

Ajimobi said, “We want to use this opportunity to allay the fears of property owners and investors across Oyo State that it will no longer be business as usual. Where there is no law, there is no offence, but now we have a law in place.

“We will ensure the full implementation of this law. I, therefore, advise those bent on encroaching on other people’s property, most times using violence, threats or imaginary connection with the powers that be to have a rethink.

“I salute our ever-reliable members of the House of Assembly, led by the distinguished speaker, Hon. Michael Adeyemo, for the industry put into this holistic law that is meant to give property owners a new lease of life.”

11-Year Old Secondary School Student raped By Four Men

Four suspects have been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly raping an 11-year-old secondary school pupil in the NNPC area of Ibadan.

Our correspondent learnt that the girl was raped on Saturday by the men while hawking detergent for her mother.

It was learnt that two men on a commercial motorcycle had approached the victim and told her that they wanted to buy three sachets of the product, which cost N50 each.

It was gathered that after the men offered her N500 and she said she did not have change. The men told her to come with them to a location where she would collect her money.

After rejecting the idea, she was said to have been held and dragged to an uncompleted building where two other men were waiting.

A source in the area said the minor was raped by the four men.

She said, “The girl was able to identify her attackers which led to their arrest.”

The source, however, added that there was an attempt to cover up the crime, as the mother of the victim was offered money to keep quiet.

“The mother had separated from her husband. They have three children together and the victim is one of them. When she threatened to report to the police, they threatened to beat her up and later offered her money to keep quiet about the crime. One of the rapists has connection with the police and also boasted that even if she reported them, they would not be arrested. They didn’t show remorse for their sin,” the source added.

The Public Relations Officer for the state command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who confirmed the arrest, said investigation had begun and that the suspects would be charged to court if found guilty.

He said, “The case was reported by the mother of the victim. Because of the seriousness of the crime, the state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, directed that the case should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of the command for a thorough investigation.”

40 Year Old Lesson Teacher R*pes Her 9 Year Old Pupil In Ibadan

An Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a 40-year-old teacher, Sampson Eyo, who allegedly raped his nine-year-old pupil.

 

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Taiwo Oladiran, directed that the accused should be remanded at the Agodi Prisons custody pending the advice of the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions.

 

Consequently, the court did not take the plea of the accused.

 

Eyo, a teacher in a nursery and primary school, Bashorun, Ibadan, was arraigned on one count.

 

The prosecutor, Sgt. James Oriola, told the court that the accused had unlawful carnal knowledge of the pupil between September 2016 and Jan. 19, 2017.

 

Oriola said, “Eyo, being the class teacher of the girl and also her lesson teacher, lured the girl after lesson period and had carnal knowledge of her.’’

 

He said that the accused committed the offence at 4:00p.m. at the school premises.

 

Oriola said that the offence contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

 

Section 218 stipulates 14 years imprisonment for offender.

 

The case was adjourned to Feb. 27 for mention.

A hotel today was destroyed after a fire outbreak yesterday morning at Alakia Ibadan in Oyo state. According to reports, all efforts to quench the fire was to no avail due to inability of the state fire service to arrive on time.

Report has it that Unknown gunmen chased a motorcycle rider to an area on Lodge Street, Oke Ado, Ibadan, Oyo State,  on Monday night and shot him on the head at close range, after which they went away with his motorcycle.When Tribune Metro got to the scene of the incident a few minutes after it occurred, it was learnt that the man, whose identity was unknown, was shot at about 7.55p.m.

A resident of the street who spoke under anonymity said that he was sitting outside when he noticed two motorcycles following each other.The deceased, it was said, rode alone on his bike while three men, who later turned out to be armed robbers, rode on the second motorcycle.

“As they got in front of my house, I heard one of the armed robbers shout ‘stop!’. The next thing I heard was a shot that rang out.

“They dragged the rider off his bike and one of them took over while the remaining two rode on their operational motorcycle and speed off,” the eyewitness said further.

Tribune Metro noticed that the rider died a few minutes after writhing in pains, as he bled from the head. His pair of slippers lay beside him on the spot where he fell.

About 20 minutes after the occurrence, police patrol teams from Iyaganku and Orita Challenge Divisions as well as Swift Response Squad (SRS) arrived at the scene, led by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Iyaganku Division, to evacuate the body of the man.

Three Internet Fraudsters Arrested In Ibadan (PHOTO)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Office has apprehended a gang of internet fraudsters comprising the trio of Davies Ayomide Rapheal, Adeyemi Adewumi Segun and Oyewole Segun who allegedly engage in phony online purchases from designated auction sites. ...

The suspects confessed to have accomplices abroad. They were arrested by the operatives of the Commission at different locations following tip-off. Rapheal, the arrow head of the gang, prowls on the internet particularly on Craigslist- an online sale and purchase sites, where items ranging from cars and furniture are being displayed for sale.

His words: “I usually pose like a genuine buyer and engage any seller in a bid to purchase a car. After the seller had agreed to the terms of purchase, I go online to edit any PayPal receipt online to reflect whatever agreement reached which includes cost of purchase and the accrued percentage for shipping. Our cohorts abroad, collect the shipping cost which had been added to the cost of the car on the PayPal receipt and send it to either Adeyemi or Oyewole who receives it in Nigeria for us to share.

An indigene of Ipetumodu, Osun State, Raphael, 27, said he had to recruit his co-travelers, Adeyemi and Oyewole into the Syndicate in order to raise money to pursue his dream of becoming a music star, having dropped out of school.

He confessed to have made about N2.5million from the various scams from which he bought a car, Honda Accord (EOD) with registration number EKY437EA, and a Phantom 5 phone. Adeyemi and Oyewole who hail from Ondo and Ibadan respectively, also confessed to be members of the Syndicate. Aside being part of the auction scam, Adeyemi, 27, stated that he was also into romance scam and had fleeced some unsuspecting victims of their money, the latest being $250 that he got from an Australian. On his part, Oyewole, 31, confessed that he collects their proceeds through his account domiciled in one of the new generation banks.

 According to him, his share in the latest ‘deal’ was N247,000 which was ten percent of the sum realised. The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

Pastor Jailed For Cutting Wife's Breast In Ibadan

Pastor Adejare Adebayo, 61, has been remanded in Agodi Prison in Ibadan, Oyo State by an Ibadan Magistrates’ Court for allegedly cutting off his wife’s left breast with a kitchen knife.

This led to the death of the woman.

Adebayo was arraigned before Chief Magistrate F. Richard on Monday on a one-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The deceased, Risikayat Adegbule, 43, was said to have died few days later as a result of the excruciating pain suffered after losing one of the breast to the knife.

Adebayo is the pastor in charge of Glory Triumphant Chapel, Tose Area, Moniya.

The Prosecutor, Sunday Ogunremi, had told the court that Adebayo had on December 24, 2016 at 12am at Onikankan village in Ibadan unlawfully caused the death of Rukayat Adegbule by cutting her breast.

Ogunremi stated that the defendant committed an offence contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Vol. 11 Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap IX Vol. 11 of the Laws of Oyo State.

The Chief Magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded in Agodi Prison and adjourned further hearing to February 14.

However, family sources told the News Agency of Nigeria that Adebayo told them that he helped the wife cut the other affected breast because she had earlier suffered cancer in her right breast.

He was alleged to have taken the deceased wife to an unknown place for weeks before he resurfaced with the news of her death.

Ogunremi said: “Further investigation revealed that the family members of the deceased had been looking for her only to be called later by the husband informing them of her death.”

Yuletide moments should have been a year of celebration for state civil and public service workers and citizens of a country as the government is expected to put smile on the face of their people, various state workers are in the festive mood now because of the various activities put in place by their state government, which is expected to increase the productivity of the workers in coming years.

But reverse has been the case of Oyo state workers as their Executive Governor gave a glaring wrong present to it’s worker as a compensation for their services render towards the state economical development. As six hundred and sixty two (662) workers and removed two thousand, and twenty one (2021) fictitious names of workers and pensioners from its payroll.

The workers were sacked for allegedly forging waec certificate, this accusation against workers have not been confirmed, this is a violation of human right and a threat to the remaining workers in service, subsequently the two thousand and twenty one members whose names where alleged fictitious, as not been asked to come for verification before they were been removed from its pay roll.

We also call on the affected workers to go for their verification of results and make a submission to the NLC chairman office and  to the general public for perfection.

Motorcyclists Clash With Police in Ibadan Over N50 Bribe, 1 Reported dead

There was pandemonium yesterday at Moniya , Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, when a policeman allegedly killed a motorcyclist over N50 bribe.

Two other people were shot by police officers attached to Moniya Police Station in Akinyele Local Government.

An eyewitness said trouble started when a motorcyclist carrying two passengers refused to stop when he was flagged down by a police officer.

He was reportedly hit in the head with a baton.

The motorcyclist reportedly fell off the bike and died on the spot.

It was gathered that the deceased’s colleagues threatened to burn down the police station.

In an attempt to scare them off, the police were alleged to have released tear gas and shot into the air.
Unfortunately, two people were hit by stray bullets. They are receiving treatment.

Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the death of the motorcyclist but denied he was hit by the police.

According to Ajisebutu, “Due to a stop and search by the police, a motorcyclist who was carrying three passengers, refused to stop as ordered by the security officers.

“As he was trying to escape, he ran into a pothole, fell and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

“As a result of this, his colleagues attacked a police patrol vehicle and seized an AK-rifle which was later recovered.

“Not done, they headed to Moniya Police Station, threatening to burn down the station.

“The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) said five suspects were arrested.
“There was no shooting. Later, the DPO held a meeting with them.

“Normalcy had since returned to the area as the Commissioner of Police enjoined residents to go about their business.”

One Dead, 12 Vehicles Burnt As Tanker Explosion Rocks Ibadan

One person  lost his life in ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Sunday as a fully loaded tanker burst into flames on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.

Thirty shops, four trailers and 12 commercial vehicles were destroyed, even as several other commuters were injured.

The incident, which occurred at 6:30 am, was said to have been caused by a Jigawa-bound truck, registered as KZR 418 XA, loaded with wheat.

It was gathered that the truck’s driver lost control while trying to overtake another truck carrying pasta and noodles.

The front section of the Jigawa-bound truck, eyewitnesses said, came off, ramming into a NIPCO fuel tanker parked on the roadside.

The fuel tanker burst into flames when its content spilled on the road.

Nurudeen Alimi, driver of a trailer registered JJJ 363 XB, owned by a logistics company said: “I parked my truck by the roadside to check a faulty engine. Then I saw a wheat-laden trailer trying to overtake another trailer.”

Police, Hunters Clash In Ibadan, 11 Feared Dead

Report indicates that no fewer than, eleven people lost their lives on Tuesday in Ogbere, Onilanta in Ona- Ara Local government of Oyo State when policemen and hunters clashed in the area.

It was gathered that about 40 local hunters, popularly called “Agbekoya”, exchanged gunfire with policemen and attempted to break into the police armoury.

Residents of the area claimed that 11 people died, including hunters and policemen. However, the police said only one person died.

It was gathered that problem ensued when the police insisted on checking the hunters’ convoy but they refused.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Isiaka, told newsmen that “The men were coming in some vehicles, including a black Toyota Pathfinder.

“Some policemen, who were at the checkpoint in front of their station, stopped them and challenged them for driving recklessly. One of the hunters got down and started arguing with the police.

“He slapped the policeman. Later, we started hearing gunshots. There was shooting from both sides.

“The crisis was so much that everybody started running to avoid being caught in crossfire.”

Some workers at the Elekuro High School close to the scene reported that some policemen rushed into the compound and removed their uniforms.

Police spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said “Some robbery suspects, identified as Agbekoya militants in three vehicles, attacked policemen on stop-and-search duty at Ogbere and attempted to snatch a rifle from a policeman.

“The bandits were repelled. The hoodlums fled, only to regroup and attack the Ogbere Police Station, advancing to the armoury, shooting their way in.

“The police again repelled their attack and in the process one hoodlum was fatally injured.

“Two suspects were arrested. The injured suspect died on the way to hospital. Items recovered from the hoodlums include: five cut-to-size locally-made guns, 103 cartridges and assorted charms.

“A Sports Utility Van (SUV) was also seized. The arrested suspects have made confessions and are helping the police in their investigation.”

Three suspected internet scammers have been nabbed and confessed to have been using charms to facilitate their illicit online business.

The suspects were apprehended at their hideout at Soka area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital at about 6:30am on Wednesday by the police command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu, said “The arrest of the suspects (names withheld) was made possible following a tip off by members of the public.

“The suspects, who had been elusive for some time now, were eventually arrested after several days of intelligence gathering and painstaking investigation carried out by the police.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being internet fraudsters and that they had defrauded many innocent victims they referred to as ‘clients’ of their hard earned money in naira and foreign currencies.

“They also disclosed that they often used charms to facilitate their illicit business.

“This they did by hypnotising victims and ‘commanding’ them to part with their dollars and valuable properties.

“The suspects further disclosed that those who had fallen victims included foreign nationals and Nigerians alike.

“Exhibits recovered from them included four assorted laptops and assorted criminal charms.”

While advising youths to shun crime and engage in legitimate businesses, saying the police were determined to prosecute unrepentant criminals in the state, the PPRO said, “The Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, has directed that discreet investigation be carried out about their other nefarious activities at the end of which they would be arraigned in court.”

Notorious Robbery Gang Killed In Ibadan

The Oyo state police command has confirmed the death of a notorious robbery gang who is identified as Moroof, by the local vigilante during a robbery operation in the Alafara, area of Ibdan

The Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said Moroof was shot severally but two other gang members took him to a hideout where they sought the services of a local doctor to treat him.

He said, “The robbery gang met their waterloo when they invaded Alafara area of Ibadan in the early hours of November 7, 2016. The robbery suspects, who had been terrorising many parts of the state, engaged in a gun battle with a vigilante group, resulting in the fatal shooting of the gang leader.

“Although the hoodlums escaped from the scene, two members of the criminal gang were later arrested at their criminal hideout by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command while they were arranging for  a local doctor to treat the injured member, who later died as a result of injuries. Ojeniyi Ibrahim, 32, and Taiwo Odetola, 27, were arrested,” said Ajisebutu.

Odetola told PUNCH that the late Moroof planned the operation but that the plan went awry.

He said, “He took us to the area for the robbery operation but on our way, we encountered a vigilante group who shot at us. Moroof was badly injured and we took him to a place where we were spotted by the residents of the area and arrested.”

The church members – Ogundijo Abiola and Alabi Olukunle (Church Drummer),of a Methodist Church Cathedral in Ibadan, Oyo State have been arrested for planning to rob the church with intent to steal N1.5m.

Abiola and the church drummer, Olukunle had earlier invited a gang of armed robbers to invade the church and cart away the money with the plan to share the loot with the robbers.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Adekunle Ajisebutu, who paraded the suspects on Friday before newsmen said the duo was arrested during the last Sunday service.

According to him, “The anti-robbery squad of the command foiled an armed robbery attack on the church in Ibadan on November 6, 2016 and arrested two members of the church for their involvement in the crime.

“The robbery was at its final planning stage when they were arrested,” the PPRO said, noting that the planned robbery was conceived by the two suspects, who invited the gang to rob the church of the large sum of money.

The 43-year-old prime suspect, Abiola, in his confession before newsmen said “I contacted my accomplice on Saturday and told him that there was enough money to steal in the church.

“I also told him that the money would be shared equally.”

On his part, Olukunle, 25, said Abiola contacted him and told him that he needed people who could handle the church priest.

“Abiola said he wanted to beat the priest and then rob the church of N1.5m.

“I know a thug so I contacted him and he agreed to do it, but Abiola called me again to halt the operation and I did.

“But on Sunday, police came to the church and arrested us.

“I am only a drummer in the church, please spare me,” Olukunle added.

The PPRO stated that the matter was under investigation and the duo will be arraigned soon.

Man Arrested For Killing FRSC Officer In Ibadan (PHOTO)

The Oyo Police Command has arrested a former Federal Road Safety Corps member, who killed an official of the FRSC in Oyo town.

The suspect, Nurudeen Alin (32), and his accomplice, Mohammed Garba (26), went to the residence of their victim, Yahuza Fakai, at College Road, Amejiogbe area of Oyo town and stabbed him with a knife several times.

The state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters in Ibadan, said investigation revealed that Ali was dismissed from the FRSC for driving licence touting offence, stating also that the victim had on many occasions supported Ali with money after he lost his job.


He said, “The victim and Ali were friends and after Ali was dismissed, he got a lot of financial help from Fakai. On October 14 this year, Ali and an accomplice, Garba, went to Fakai’s house and stabbed him to death. The Atiba police division was mandated to unravel the murder, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The murder weapon, a knife, was recovered from them.”

Ali, who confessed to the crime during an interview with correspondents, said his late friend had promised to give him some money but delayed in doing so, which was what made him angry and attacked him.

“Fakai was my friend because we worked together at FRSC before I was dismissed. He had been helping me until I killed him. A day before he was killed, he called me and gave me some money. He also said that I should see him again for more money. I went to his house with Garba but when we got there, I needed to receive a call and stepped out, by the time I returned to the house, Garba had stabbed him in the neck. He handed the knife to me and I also stabbed him. We left him for dead. I was later arrested in my house by the police,” said the suspect.

Giving the account of his involvement in the crime, Garba said the deceased had promised to assist Ali but delayed the assistance after learning that he was hugely indebted.

He said, “Our aim was to threaten him with the knife so that he could release the money but after stabbing him in the neck, I realised that the injury was life threatening so I left the scene because I was afraid. Ali stabbed him more leading to his death. I had never met the deceased before that day.”

The incident occurred early yesterday morning after the concerned and aggrieved students mobilized some other colleagues and proceeded to the school compound to perpetrate these acts.

They are students of Isale-Oyo Community Grammar School.
It took the timely intervention of the men of the Fire Service to put off the fire. Security operatives have been informed of the dastardly act but the culprits were yet to be apprehended. 

The school appeared deserted as teachers and students have fled the area for fear of being harmed. Some of the culprits were also seen with dangerous weapons and charms, damaging properties.

Also, six students of Oranyan Grammar School, Oyo allegedly r*ped a female corper yesterday.
