Lagos State To Create 27,500 Jobs Through Community Sanitation

On Wednesday March 1, 2017, Lagos state Governor Mr Akinwunmi signed the Environmental Management Protection bill into law.

Governor Ambode said that under the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, the commercial sector would be serviced by licensed waste management operators while an environmental consortium will provide waste collection, processing and disposal services for residential properties through a long term concession. Over the concession period, the consortium would be deploying a large multi-dimensional fleet of over 20 landfill and transfer loading station management vehicles, 590 new rear-end loader compactors, 140 Operational vehicles and close to 900,000 new bins to all be electronically tracked and monitored by our new unit PUMAU (Public Utilities Monitoring Assurance Unit) under the Ministry of Environment.

Governor Ambode also added that aside the fact that the initiative would create at least 27,500 jobs, the Community Sanitation Workers (CSW) who would be engaged will receive several incentives including tax reliefs and healthcare, life, injury and accident insurance benefits all aimed at tackling the issue of poverty and the chronic unemployment crisis.

“Everyone from the cart pushers to the existing PSPs and casual workers at the dumpsites have been considered in the plan and will be accommodated within the new environmental regime. In addition, we are extending opportunities to everyone along the value chain by working to create vocational training in the related areas through LASTVEB,” he said.

Giving details of the law, the Governor said that sanitation will now be a daily affair in the State while the CSWs would be deployed in every ward across the State. He also said that an annual Public Utility Levy (PUL) would be introduced to replace all service fees previously paid to the Waste Management authorities, adding that the public was carried along in determining the rates, which according to him is relatively low. “ The money will be held in the Environmental Trust Fund and managed meticulously by a Board of SEC regulated trustees. “The trustees are under strict obligations to the people of Lagos and will be accountable to the people for every naira we spend in line with our overall environmental agenda. Compliance is the key.

The burden of the cost of providing these services will remain low if everyone does their part and pays their PUL. “With the newly positioned LASECORPS, we will work within the community to enforce the new laws. The State will have a zero-tolerance policy for offenders because simply put, disregarding payment of your PUL or flouting the new regulations ultimately promotes activities that lead to the loss of lives,” Governor Ambode said. Earlier, the Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on the Environment, Hon Saka Fafunmi, commended the Governor for his passion to evolve the environmental laws in the State, saying that the Law would ensure a cleaner, safer and more prosperous Lagos.

The call was made by NANS Senate President, Comrade Oyejide Salam, in Jos during an advocacy campaign tour on the already passed bill by the National Assembly.
Salam said, “We want to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the request of Nigerians and assent to the bill.”
According to him, the office of the NANS Senate President is advocating for the creation of Jobs, proper budget implementations on projects that could employ Nigerian graduates and well-meaning youths.
He added that for over 18 years, the voluntary organisation through its vibrant leader, Dr Dickson Akoh, has worked hard to ensure that a chunk of Nigerian youths are employed through the Peace Corps platform.
“The rate of unemployment in Nigeria is a scourge that is prevalent amidst the youth which comprises the majority of the masses,” he stressed.

FG To Recruit Additional 300,000 Graduates Into The N-Power Scheme -- Lai Mohammed

President Muhammadu Buhari led federal government said it will soon recruit 300,000 additional graduates in the next phase of the N-power volunteer programme.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, gave the assurance at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday at a special town hall meeting for the youth.

The minister specifically stated that the Federal Government was committed to tackling youth employment.

“We did not create today’s hardships, but we have resolved to end it and make life more abundant for our people. All we ask is your undiluted support,” he said.

Mohammed said 25,000 cooks have been trained for the home-grown school feeding programme which, he noted, has taken off in Osun, Kaduna and Anambra.

He said over one million Nigerians willing to access loans between N200,000 and N100,000 were set to get such at a very low interest rate from the Bank of Industry.

He further stated that N500 billion had been earmarked in the 2017 budget proposals to sustain the Social Intervention Plan.

Buhari's Government Has Created Jobs For 200,000 Nigerians -- Lai Mohammed

Minister of information and culture, Alh Lai Mohammed

The minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says “corrupt elements” opposed to the change agenda are making government activities obscure to give the wrong impression that work hasn’t been going on.

According to Lai, the federal government, under President Muhammadu Buhari, has done so much, including the “unprecedented” creation 200,000 jobs “in one fell swoop”.

Mohammed said this on Thursday in Abuja at the launch of the Federal Government of Nigeria Information App (FGN IAPP), designed to provide real time information from the government to Nigerians at home and abroad.

He said the corrupt had chosen to fight the government with their ill-gotten wealth, by “distorting our messages and obfuscating our activities”.

“A government that has achieved the unprecedented feat of creating 200,000 jobs in one fell swoop cannot be said to have done nothing,” he said.

“A government that has liberated every inch of our occupied territory from Boko Haram and sent the terrorists fleeing should not be portrayed as not doing anything.

“A government that is surely and steadily making our country self-sufficient in staples such as rice and embarking on a massive infrastructural renewal cannot be said to be doing nothing

“A government that is boldly tackling an economic recession that was foisted on it by years of profligacy, lack of savings and a sudden crash on oil prices deserves accolades, not vilification.”

He added that the FGN IAPP will help to keep Nigerians and non-Nigerians better informed of the activities of the federal government as well as getting the necessary feedback.

“Irrespective of where you are in the world, from today all you needed to do is to download the FGN IAPP, and you will have access to factual and real time information on the activities of the federal government of Nigeria,” he said.

Mohammed said the ‘Be Inspired’ section of the App will make it possible for any Nigerian, irrespective of status, to meet top political, business, religious and other leaders.
He added that the App also provides a feedback section that allows anyone make his or her feelings known about any government policy or programmes.

Over 500 Graduates Storm Lafarge Holcim Cement Company To Demand Employment

No fewer than 500 youths from Akamkpa and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas of Cross River State on Monday protested against alleged marginalization by Lafarge Holcim Cement Company in contract award and employment.

Youths from the communities hosting the cement company decried the company’s inability to implement the 80 per cent local content agreement it entered with the host communities.

NAN reports that Lafarge Holcim is hosted by six communities under Akamkpa and Akpabuyo LGAs.

They were armed with placards of various inscriptions which read: “Give us employment and contracts; “We want the position of Human Resource Manager to come from the host communities’’.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved youths, Mr Bassey Effiong, Youth Leader from Akansoko Community, said that the company’s marginalisation had rendered many youths in the area jobless.

Effiong said that they had written many letters to the company to consider them for employment and award of contracts, which he said, yielded no result.

“We have graduates and technicians who are willing to do this job, but Lafarge prefers to bring people from outside to work in the company. “We want the office to be brought back to Calabar from Lagos, and they should stop giving us excuses that we don’t have the technical know-how to work with them.

“All we are saying is that we need employment and contracts for our youths. “The company should implement the 80 per cent local content agreement we entered with it,’’ the youths spokesperson said.

Also, Mr Ojong Etta, Youth Leader from Mbobui Community in Akamkpa LGA, said that youths were only employed to do `labour jobs’, while the executive positions were allotted to non-indigenes.“We want the Human Resource Manager of Lafarge Cement Company to be an indigene of the host communities.“We have been over marginalized in terms of employment and award of contracts. We need a change of things in the management of Lafarge Company,’’ he said.

In his remarks, the traditional ruler of Akamkpa, Ntufam Clement Emayip, said that it was wrong to relocate the company’s head office from Calabar to Lagos.Emayip urged the company to consider youths from the host communities for employment and award of contracts.

Addressing newsmen after the protest, Mrs Folashade Ambrose, the Lafarge Director of Communication and Public Affairs, said that the company appreciated the existing relationship between the host communities and Lafarge.

“I have heard all their complaints. I will take their messages back to the management of the company, and we will get back to the host communities soon,’’ she said.
