Why Senate Rejected Increase In Price Of Data – Saraki
Bukola Saraki |
The
Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, has explained why the Senate rejected the
plan by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to increase the price of
data.
Saraki
stated that the Senate will continue to make sure Nigerians had access to
affordable Internet.
He was speaking, after the NCC suspended the plan to hike data tarriffs on
Wednesday, following an order from the upper house to halt the move which was to begin December
1.
“Today,
the Senate condemned the proposed increase of data tariffs by Service
Providers, in line with the directive of the Nigerian Communications Commission
(NCC),” he said.
“We
strongly believe that we must protect the Nigerian people that sent us to Abuja
to represent their interests from the height of the irresponsible plan that has
been put forward by the NCC.
“At
a time when the cost of living has gone up for all Nigerians, due to inflation
being at 18.3%, the NCC’s actions have implicitly mandated the service
providers to increase their costs to maintain their profits. This is
unacceptable.
“I
have seen the power of the internet — and how it serves to give a voice to the
voiceless, and a platform for millions to air their views. This is why the
Senate will continue to maintain that access to the internet remains affordable
for all Nigerians.
“On
this note, the Senate has resolved to: – Halt the new tariff proposal by the
NCC; – Mandate the Senate Committee on Communications to conduct thorough
oversight on the process that brought it about; and ensure that Nigerians are
always carried along when such processes are considered”, he added.
Bag Of Rice Now Sells At N8000 In Ebonyi State
A 50kg bag of rice is now selling for N8,000 in Ebonyi state,
eastern Nigeria. This contrasts markedly with the over N20,000 price tag for
imported rice.
The cheering news was reported by spokesman of Central Bank of Nigeria, Isaac Okoroafor in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state on Tuesday..
Okoroafor is the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN.
He spoke at a sensitization workshop for the CBN Anchor programme for farmers.
“We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme; 50 Kg of local rice is now N8, 000 in Ebonyi. Already, the Abia Government has ordered rice from Ebonyi for Christmas,”.
He said that the Anchor Borrowers Programme for the promotion of Agriculture will make the country begin exportation of rice by 2017.
“We must rid ourselves of eating foreign rice that has been stored for over nine years in Thailand, Vietnam and India. Nigerian rice is fresh and healthier.
He further said: “What we have done with this programme so far is to create jobs through farming, especially for the unemployed youths.
“Nigerian youths must wake up, dust themselves up and join this worthy campaign.," he added

Boy Kills A Female Final Year Student, Lock Her Corpse Somewhere And Run Away
A final year female student of the Delta
State Polytechnic, simply identified as Julia, was allegedly murdered by her
big boy lover, said to be a cultist, in her room...
The lady, who was in the department
of Mathematics and Statistics, was murdered in her room in a private hostel off
Polytechnic Road in Ogwashi-Uku on Tuesday.
One of her co-students in the hostel, who spoke with SR, the boyfriend, whose name has yet to be ascertained, had spent the previous night in the room of the deceased, and had stolen her ATM card.
"After her cultist lover had
left the following day she received an alert of a N100,000 deduction from her
bank account where she discovered her ATM card was missing. Not comfortable,
she went to her bathroom to take her bath. Immediately after that, she received
another alert of N45,000 making it N145,000 that was [withdrawn] from her
account by the unknown person.
"Before leaving for the bank, she complained to us [about] the strange development. Again, on her return from the bank where she went to complain, she told us the bank assured her that the culprit could only be known and arrested after going through their CCDC camera. She was told to go home and report back the following [day] before meeting her untimely death," the co-student said.
The source speculated that unknown to anyone in the hostel, the lover sneaked into Julia's room and murdered her with a battle axe, locked the corpse inside the room and ran away with her keys.
"Not until the next morning when everybody became apprehensive of her whereabouts and we [had] to break her door where we saw her lifeless body with blood stains everywhere in the room. Immediately we raised the alarm and everybody in the area rushed down and the matter was reported to the Ogwashi-Uku Police station," the source narrated
The police and the bank are currently working to track and arrest the suspect, who is on the run.
Sadly, Julia is gone and has been buried in her home town.

Read What Hospital Did To An Accident Victim Over Non-Payment Of N3,500 Bill
A 20-year old man identified as James Omase, who was riding
a motorcycle along Arab Road in Kubwa Abuja, when another rider rammed into
him, causing him to fall and sustain injuries, was reportedly refused medical
attention for 3-hours on Saturday by the Kubwa General Hospital over his
inability to pay a N3, 500 bill.
According to a report by Punch Metro, the young man, who
worked as a security guard in a residential building, lost two teeth, sustained
an injury on his upper lips, had bruises on his head, right upper arm and on
both hands as a result of the accident.
Omase was taken to the hospital around 6:00pm but the
medical personnel refused to attend to him until around 9pm, when his employer
showed up and paid the bill.
Speaking to Northern City News on Sunday, he revealed that
he offered the nurses the N2,500 on him but they allegedly declined to accept
it, insisting that he would not be treated until he paid the full amount.
He said, “I was involved in the accident around 5pm but
nobody took me to the hospital till 6pm. I was on the ground in pains and
people were passing by, nobody volunteered to take me to the hospital.
“It was a friend who saw me lying along the road, that took
me to the hospital. But when I got there, the nurses said they won’t attend to
me until I paid N3,500 for treatment. I told them I had N2,500 but they refused
to accept it or attend to me.
“I was lying on a bench in pains for many hours. It was a
neighbour, who learnt that I was involved in an accident, that went to inform
my employers, who came to the hospital around 9pm and paid the money before I
was treated.”
The acting Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Hospital
Management Board, Mrs. Alice Odey-Achu, expressed disappointment over the
conduct of the nurses, saying their action was unacceptable, and noted that all
public hospitals were supposed to attend to emergency cases, with or without
payment by the patient.
“Our policy is that all emergency cases must be attended to.
So, it is unacceptable for the medical staff of the hospital to neglect a
patient on emergency. I will get across to the CMD and find out what happened.
We have always insisted that emergency cases must be attended to immediately
because it could be anybody,” she stated.
Big Snake Fell From Ceiling Of A Restaurant (Photo/Video)
Customers in a restaurant got the shock of their lives after
a big snake dropped from the ceiling. The animal managed to creep into the hole
of the roof before it was caught by wildlife experts.
A viral video with a snake emerging in the restaurant over
the heads of terrified diners is making rounds on the internet.
The huge creature somehow managed to dislocate the tiles of
the roof and tried to crawl out of the ceiling causing the scared customers to drop
their meals and move away.
Some member of the personnel later called a team of wildlife
experts to pull the animal out of its den and calm down the nervous diners.
Footage shows a snake protruding from the hole, while
specialists are trying to grip it on its head with a metal hook, while people
are heard chattering behind the camera.
The reptile is believed to be a python, however, it remains
unclear where the footage was filmed. The video has expectedly already gathered

Story Of A Lady Who Was Drugged And Raped By A Man In A Hotel
This story was shared by a Facebook user, Dian Chelsea, who
is probably the girl in question because the Facebook has only this post and
was opened on 26th of November 2016.
The
young lady was allegedly used as rituals after visiting a man whose name was
given as Emeka Augustine Ozulike who started texting her out of the blues, told
her he wants to marry her, invited her to a hotel, drugged her, raped her and
she has been bleeding since that day up till today.

"These goes out to
young ladies; beware of the kind of company you keep especially that of strange
men you know nothing about.
In today's world, many
atrocities are being committed and the most painful part of it is that the
culprits keep getting away with their numerous crimes.
I wouldn't want to base this on the present situation of the country because these acts has been in existence for as long as I can tell.
I wouldn't want to base this on the present situation of the country because these acts has been in existence for as long as I can tell.
Here goes the story of
sexually abused young girl and possibly, almost used for ritual by one Mr.Emeka
Augustine Ozulike popularly known as (Obele), who hails from Akwa Village in
Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State. Sources have it that he's a successful
business man with his businesses scattered all about the Main Market,
Onitsha.
The abused girl pleaded
for utmost anonymity but summed up courage to share her story which she
believes is going to serve as an eye opener for young girls in our society.
It all began when a strange call entered her phone from this man. Who consistently claimed that she gave him her number which was a blatant lie. She later discovered that someone she regarded as friend actually gave her contact to the man. At first, she was very reluctant to speak to this stranger but the pressure became unbearable that she was left with no option than to tell him off which she did but that didn't help as well. The said Emeka continued saying that his intentions were genuine, that he actually want her for a wife.

The said Emeka continued saying that his intentions were genuine, that he actually want her for a wife.
On hearing this, the
girl calmed a little and decided to be a little bit more civil with this
criminal. They eventually established a neutral conversation between themselves
but the girl was still very skeptical about this Emeka guy. He suggested to her
that it will be okay for them to see each other so that she will be more
convinced that he's real which she agreed to but distance seems to be a barrier
at that point in time because they both stayed in different locations.
One faithful day, an
important business had to bring Emeka to the city of residence of this girl; he
called her as usual and informed her about his visit. She reluctantly went to
the hotel where he lodged to see him, on getting there; they met at the hotel
restaurant. They sat for a while and the man suggested they go to his room so
the can talk comfortably. She hesitated at first and later obliged.
On getting to his room,
he offered her a drink (a box juice), unknowingly to her, the juice was
drugged. The last she remembered was taking the drink and possibly waking up
naked after several hours of being knocked out by the juice. She cried and
later left in shame because she never planned to give this beast her cookie
just yet. Getting home that evening, she noticed she was bleeding. Being a
young girl, she thought it was her monthly flow but the bleeding
continued.
She tried to reach the
bastard on phone, after several missed calls; he neither picked nor returned
her calls. At that point in time, in the midst of the bleeding, it just dawned
on her that this man had used and possibly dumped her. Now her fear is the
abnormal bleeding she's experiencing because after all medical checks and
series of tests performed on her, she's normal with no fracture anywhere inside
her system but the blood continues to flow. She's very scared and confused
having been proven Okay medically. She decided to cry out to the public to help
her pass this message across to Emeka Augustine Ozulike ( aka OBELE) to come
and undo whatever he did to her while he drugged her in his hotel room.

Sheriff Blames Mimiko Over PDP’s Defeat
Alimodu Sheriff |
The Senator Ali Modu
Sheriff-led faction of the PDP has blamed the outgoing governor of Ondo State,
Olusegun Mimiko, for failure of the party to win Saturday’s
governorship election in the state.
Addressing
newsmen, yesterday, in Abuja, the deputy national chairman for the faction, Dr.
Cairo Ojougboh, said that impunity and lack of respect for the PDP constitution
and the rule of law were the major problems that led to the party’s failure in
the Edo and Ondo states governorship elections.
“In the
election, APC scored 244,842 votes while PDP scored 150,380 and AD scored
126,889 votes. It is a fact that the AD votes belong to PDP and the simple
arithmetic shows why PDP lost; our votes went to Oke and AD.
“When
Mimiko returned to the PDP, his fellow governors appealed to him to allow for
harmonisation but he refused. All the PDP members, led by Oke left the party
for him. In choosing a candidate to succeed him, he did not allow the PDP
members to buy forms. He mainly anointed Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, who was returned
unopposed.
“Party
members cried to the high heavens that Jegede is from the central zone where
Mimiko hails from. Their cries fell on deaf ears. On the other hand, the
authentic primary was conducted where six participants were involved and Dr.
Jimoh Ibrahim emerged.
Why Fayose’s Seized Assets Cannot Be Released – EFCC
Ekiti State Gov, Ayodele fayose |
The Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has given reasons why the six houses seized
from Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose may never be returned to him.
The EFCC said the houses – both in Lagos and Abuja – were seized via a court order issued on July 20 this year while it was investigating the governor in relation to various offences including diversion of public funds.
It said it has, in the cause of investigating Fayose, found that the houses were acquired through third parties, who it has identified and has “proceeded against.”
The commission said the question of whether or not to vacate the July 20 order for the seizure of the house no longer arises as the new owners of the houses have been identified and a new order has been issued against them.
The EFCC stated its position in its counter affidavit to a motion by Fayose asking a Federal High Court in Abuja to vacate the July 20 order for temporary forfeiture of his houses.
The house include: four units of 4 bedroom at Charlets 3, 4, 6 and 9 Plot 100 Tiamiyi Salvage V. I. Lagos.
Others are: No: 44 Osun Crescent, Maitama, Abuja and Plot 1504 Yedseram Street, Maitama, Abuja.
The EFCC said, in its counter affidavit, that its investigation has revealed that houses were acquired through companies known as J.J. Technical Service, Spotless Investment Limited and one Mrs. Moji Ladeji.
It said at the expiration of the July 20 order given by Justice Nmandi Dimgba (of the Federal High Court, Abuja) for 45, it went before another judge of the court – Justice Okon Abang – for a new order of interim forfeiture granted on November 3 this year.
The EFCC argued that in view of the new interim order of forfeiture, which is to last until the case against the new owners of the properties is concluded, Fayose’s motion now before Justice Dimgba has become an academic exercise.
“An order was made by this court on the 20th of July 2016 for interim attachment/forfeiture of the properties contained in this application for a period of 45 days.
“The order has since lapsed and the respondent, upon further investigation, discovered the names through which the properties were acquired and had to proceed against those names.
“The respondent (EFCC) re-attached the properties and reapplied to this honourable court for fresh order before Honourable Justice Okon Abang, which application was considered and granted.
“An order of interim or forfeiture is meant to preserve the res (subject matter) pending investigation or conclusion of trial.
“It is thus of interest to state that in view of the respondent’s exhibit EFCC1 (a copy of the order by Justice Abang), the order now being sought by the applicant has already been overtaking by time and event.
“The applicant’s (Fayose’s) application is thus, a pure waste of time and an academic exercise, which is based on nothing,” the EFCC said.
The absence of Fayose’s lead lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) prevented the hearing of the Governor’s application yesterday.
Following the agreement of lawyers to both sides to return another day for the hearing, Justice Dimgba adjourned to December 19.

Tinubu Is A Priceless Asset – President Buhari
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the President was highly embarrassed by such "suggestions" and that Buhari was in regular contact with Tinubu before, during and after the Ondo gubernatorial election.
He said any suggestions that Buhari and the party machinery were working to destroy Tinubu had no foundation in truth or any credibility, explaining that the President was impressed by Tinubu's assurance not to work against the party in Ondo and he honoured his words.
The Presidential Media Aide also explained that President Buhari regards Tinubu as a priceless political asset to the party whose immeasurable contributions to the development and progress of the ruling party are known to all.
Malam Garba Shehu advised rumour mongers stop spreading the seeds of discord and animosity between the President and Tinubu or the party, adding that the President is proud of the Jagaban and his pivotal role in the party and the movement.
President Buhari commended Tinubu's spirit of comradeship in promptly congratulating Rotimi Akeredolu who was elected Governor.
The President also noted that at a time his administration is preoccupied with governance issues, rumours of divisions and alleged scheming within the party are counterproductive to internal unity and cohesion in APC.
He appealed to APC members and supporters to ignore rumours that could harm party unity.
Lagos State Approve Death Sentence For Kidnapper Suspects
The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill
entitled; “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Prohibition of the Act of
Kidnapping and for Other Connected Purposes.”
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the bill was sponsored by the Speaker of the House,
Mudashiru Obasa.
The bill prescribed life sentence to kidnappers, whose victims did not die in their custody.
The bill states that any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains, captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will, commits an offence, and liable on conviction to death sentence.
The bill, which criminalised attempt to kidnap, also stipulated life imprisonment for anyone who makes attempt to kidnap another person.
Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person. This attracts seven years imprisonment.
The lawmakers also approved 25 years imprisonment to whoever threatens to kidnap another person through phone call, e-mail, text message or any other means of communication.
The bill provides that any person, who knowingly or wilfully allows or permits his premises, building or a place or belonging to which he has control of, to be used for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under the law and liable to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.
NAN reports that the lawmakers amended some sections of the bill during the debate on the committee report before adoption.
The bill, aimed at ensuring zero tolerance for kidnapping, however, awaits third reading before it will be sent to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for assent.

Teacher In Kirikiri Prison For Flogging Student Till She Bled In Lagos State (PHOTO)
A
secondary school teacher, Sunday Adeshina, has been thrown into Kirikiri prison
in Lagos State after he reportedly flogged a female student until she started
bleeding.
Adeshina
was said to have flogged a 14-year-old SS3 student identified as Onyinye
Nwakaeme, on the head when she could not give a correct answer to questions he
asked her during a class.
Onyinye,
a student of Great Esteem Private Secondary School in Ijeshatedo area of Lagos
state told newsmen, “We were taking Economics class that day and I was busy
copying note. I had just returned from my father’s burial. Being behind
schedule, I used every available time to copy my notes because I had a lot to
write.
“The
teacher saw me and called me out with some people, claiming that we were making
noise and asked us to explain what he had been teaching. I didn’t get the
question right because I was really not paying attention to him. Out of anger,
he started flogging me.
“He
flogged me to the point that I was bleeding on my head and he didn’t stop. Even
when the proprietor asked him to stop, he was fierce and wanted to flog me
more.”
The
student was said to have returned to the school the next day with her siblings
who wanted to find out the true state of things in the school, but did not find
Adeshina.
The
girl’s family reported the case at Ago police station for necessary actions to
be taken since the teacher could not be located all day.
Onyinye
added, “I got home and reported to my parents about the inhumane treatment he
gave me in the school and some of my older siblings went to school with me to
address the issue. On getting there, he was absent from the school till the day
was over.
“We
decided to report at Ago police station to take necessary measures and arrest
him because the school was unapologetic. They spoke rudely to my family and
asked us to go to any length whatsoever to fight them.”
The
school management reportedly suspended the student indefinitely, after the
incident, a decision which the family is yet to come to terms with.
The
girl’s family have demanded a reinstatement of the girl but the school owner,
Pastor Rotimi Olu Joseph, has vehemently opposed it, claiming that Onyinye’s
family stormed the school premises with thugs.
According
to him, “We gave the girl suspension because it shows that she is not fit to be
in the same environment with us. If they can take laws into their hands, then
their ward has no place in the school.
“Except
they write to the school that she will be of good conduct, she will not be
reinstated.”
Adeshina,
while reacting to the allegations refused to accept the blame but rather
insisted that it remains his obligation as a teacher to correct erring students
by beating or punishing them.
The
teacher was charged to court for assault and was granted bail in the sum of
N70,000.
He
was transferred to Kirikiri prisons pending the time he would meet up with his
bail conditions.

UNN Final Year Student Commits Suicide, Left A Note
New information has shown that the young man's name was Tobechukwu Okeke and that his body was found on Sunday morning dangling from a rope in his room at Odenigwe, a community in Nsukka, Enugu State.
According to Premium Times, a neighbour close to the family said the deceased left a note behind where he apologised to his family.
The neighbour, who did not want to be named, quoted the note as stating: “Mother, Father, brother, I’m sorry. Ify, may your children never suffer. Uncle Mathias, you gave me all. I am sorry. Death calls. Linguistic department, I am sorry. Okeke Tobechukwu S. 2012/185649.”
One of the deceased’s colleagues, who also did not want to be named, said he was given an electrical wiring job to do at the Department of Linguistics in the university, because of his expertise in electrical works.
“I saw him this (Sunday) morning, he seemed to have a problem which he needed money to solve,” the colleague added.
Uju Umo, the university’s Dean of Student Affairs, confirmed the incident but added that the family had not officially informed the institution.
“I travelled for a burial last weekend and yesterday I got a text message saying a student had committed suicide,”said Mrs. Umo, a professor.
“It happened at Odenigwe, one of the host communities outside the school and I was told he left a suicide note apologising to his fellow gamblers.”
Chukwu Emmanuel, the university’s Student Union President, also confirmed the incident, and said the matter was being investigated.
“There’s no concrete details for now,” he added.
People close to the deceased described him as a comedian who always used jokes to awake sleeping students during night classes.
“He used to go around to classes at night to crack jokes and encourage students to forget their worries and focus,” a friend told revealed.
The cause of Mr. Okeke’s death is yet to be ascertained. Some of his neighbours said he was in debt, some said he was tired of schooling, others attributed his suicide to the loss of money in a network business he invested into.
His last Facebook posts showed he had been involved in the controversial investment scheme known as Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM), as he used his account to advertise the scheme.
His penultimate post, in September, read: “MMM is enriching lives of millions of Nigerians everyday. If you care to join or you have any questions please send me a message or comment below.”
