The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC are the joint umbrella unions for organised labour for the junior/
NUPENG and PENGASSAN, the nuclear affiliate unions in the oil and gas sector have called for restraint and understanding of their comrades. This is why the umbrella bodies should sheath their swords.
The labour researchers should have been more proactive in following up the updates in the crude oil export and import of refined petroleum products, especially PMS and briefing the main body appropriately, for effective coordination and cooperation with the government in taming this chronic cartel driven fuel subsidy scam.
The point here is that strike against the government that is honestly tackling this monster is like fighting against the interest of the workers and people they claim to represent.
The planned strike is unnecessary. Labour should be patriotic enough to partner with government to flush out the sludge of corruption in the system by making sure that our local refining capacity peaks to force down the prices of petrol to an acceptable level for local consumption.
Let the leadership of the organised labour explain to Nigerians what their input was at the pre increase sensitisation forum of stake holders at the Vice President's office last week Wednesday. Or, were they just black legs in the gathering?
If God allowed it now, then this is the best time to level up the bumps on the way to the much awaited deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector. In no time, Nigerians will reap the benefits of change in all facets of life in a truely honest home grown system. This, I believe.
