In light of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Tanzania on Friday, Goal asked their
readers they were optimism that new technical advisor Gernot Rohr would take the
Super Eagles to the World Cup in Russia.
The West African giants may have been pooled in a mighty tough group alongside
Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia, but the German’s first outing has clearly given fans
confidence. A whopping 89 percent of respondents replied ‘yes’ to our poll—and are broadly
backing the new man to guide the African giants to their sixth Mondiale.
However, there are still some doubters… understandably perhaps following the
malaise of the last few years…with 11 percent of respondents expecting the Eagles
to fail in their bid to reach Russia. Rohr took over as the Eagles’ technical
adviser on August 9, becoming the first permanent appointment to the helm since
Sunday Oliseh resigned on February 6.
The NFF were understood to be keen on Frenchman Paul Le Guen, only for the
former Olympique Lyonnais and Glasgow Rangers boss to turn them down.
Nigeria enjoyed the majority of the possession against Tanzania, and while they
initially struggled to find the opening, they ultimately took the lead—and secured the
win—through Manchester City wonderkid Kelechi Iheanacho.
