Sometimes known for his theatrical ability to draw fouls from opponents, the 24-year-old was left writhing in agony after taking the blow.
And this time the referee was left in no doubt as to the legitimacy of the injury.
Picking himself back up off the turf after a number of seconds, Neymar was left wiping blood from his eyes as the Brazilian physio team crowded around the superstar.
He was substituted in the 69th minute as medics failed to stem the tide of blood gushing from his head wound, although his withdrawal made no impact on the game with Canarinho scoring a late goal to complete the 5-0 victory.
Neymar is now expected to fly back to Spain in order to complete his recovery after receiving a yellow card that rules him out of Tuesday’s qualifier in Venezuela.
